Abstract

The pain starts from an injury that gives rise to an inflammatory process. Treatment for this pathology is difficult, since there is no single treatment that provides a solution to this process without causing adverse effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of ethanolic extracts of R. officinalis and T. huegelii at different individual doses and in combination in a model of plantar edema induced by 1% formalin, comparing it with meloxicam as a reference drug. Wistar rats of both sexes (180±20 g mass) were used and the degree of inflammation was measured with the plethysmometer equipment (168 specimens). In females, the esophageal administration (oral route) of the ethanolic extract of R. officinalis (R) produced an anti-inflammatory effect from a dose of 100 to a dose of 562.3 mg/kg. Also in females, for the T. huegelii extract (A), an anti-inflammatory effect was observed at a dose of 562.3 mg/kg. Regarding the combination, a significant anti-inflammatory effect was produced in A70/R30 and A300/R10 mg/kg, obtaining an additive effect at lower doses administered than those observed in the individual treatment for each extract. For males, the administration of the ethanolic extract of R. officinalis at a dose of 316.2 mg/kg and T. huegelii at a dose of 562.3 mg/kg, as well as the combinations A10/R100 and A50R50 mg/kg decreased the degree of inflammation in the paw, being more effective than meloxicam. These findings indicate that ethanolic extracts of R. officinalis and T. huegelii alone and in combination have significant anti-inflammatory efficacy in the treatment of acute inflammatory pain.
