Abstract

In this research a brief review is made concerning energy production and consumption from different sources and the state of the art of one of the energy options - biodiésel - which, along with others, have been identified as cleaner and potentially renewable. All of this from the perspective of the trends in the current global development style of the world, which, in its territorial dimension, seems to have exacerbated regional inequalities and environmental deterioration in countries with lower relative development such as Mexico and others in Latin America. There are alson other countries and territories with little development with enormous socioeconomic disparities in their population sectors, mostly with low incomes and energy consumption/capita, and a shortage of productive and financial capital. Paradoxically, they are the owners of ecosystems with the greatest biodiversity on the planet and, therefore, high levels of natural capital, as is the case of the Latin American region, which is home to more than a third of the planet's global plant biodiversity. It can be concluded that work must continue on minimizing biodiésel manufacturing costs, considering raw materials and inputs and technologies that do not affect the biodiversity and natural capital of the ecosystems where they are produced.
